Back to Days 1&2 Back to Days 3&4 Day 5 A day behind schedule, we awoke before dawn to the sound of silence the wind had finally. I can imagine myself kicking back after a long day and getting lost on its towering waves and tucked-away islands, desperately trying to piece together the secrets these forbidden waters hide. While there are a few different types of projectile, my battles with enemies often resulted in repeated stabbing attacks with my spear and the occasional slinging of a rock.įrom what I’ve played of Windbound, it may be one of the most tranquil, relaxing and mysterious games I’ve played this year. You’ll have an arsenal of spears, slings and even bows and arrows to use, but you’ll be able to stab and fire your ranged weapon, and perform a basic dodge. Speaking of enemy types, Windbound’s combat feels a little barebones. Climb some conveniently-placed pillars, interact with the beacon, move on. Sure, you may have to beat a few different enemy types along the way, but it still all feels a little too simple. While we don’t know exactly how the rest of the game will pan out, the similarities from what we could gather between Chapters 1 and 4 in their main objectives were a little disappointing. With nothing to her name, she must find a way to survive by hunting and scavenging the various islands she stumbles upon as she explores the high seas. Can add A Bamboo Deck on top to Expand your Vessel. Bamboo Hull Canoe - A sturdy Canoe built with Bamboo and rope, Very sturdy. Grass Hull Canoe - A basic grass boat, extremely fragile. Players find themselves in control of Kara, a young warrior who finds herself shipwrecked and completely on her own on the Forbidden Islands. Your seacraft is your key companion on this journey, carefully craft your own custom sailing vessel to take on the treacherous waters, traversing from one island to the next. I was recently given the opportunity to go hands-on with Windbound’s opening section, and a short segment of gameplay from later on in the game, and came away feeling pretty darn positive about the whole thing. There’s a lot to love about Windbound, even if it is a rather simple survival game. Its open world elements and the freedom it gives players to explore its high seas and the uncharted islands that nestle themselves in it evoked that same sense of mystifying wonder that some of my personal favorites of recent years like Breath of the Wild, and What Remains of Edith Finch perfected in their open world design and narrative respectively. The three-dimensional graphics of Windbound is maintained in a colorful, cartoon-like style reminiscent of the bestselling The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.Ever since I laid eyes on Windbound in its announcement trailer, I was intrigued. The ruins hide the answers for questions about the archipelago's past and future and are the key to finding its way back home. On each of them the girl will find a different fauna and flora, sources of new raw materials and numerous ruins. In the case of Windbound, the lack of a minimap or even a simple compass meant I was constantly pausing to check the in-menu map as I sailed across huge swathes of empty ocean with nothing on the. This way, as Kara progresses, she can venture into more and more distant islands. Although at the beginning of the struggle the heroine has only a small boat, over time she gets access to larger and more advanced units, which are not afraid of hurricanes, high waves and even aggressive sea animals. The materials are needed both to create new tools and weapons (like a bow or spear to hunt animals or defend against their attacks) and to build new boats and improve existing ones. When travelling on Forbidden Islands, Kara must not only feed herself, but also obtain a variety of raw materials. From there, you can head to the map’s lone (but hard-to-miss) shrine, teleport to a recurring dreamlike space for a bit of Journey-style storytelling. Our primary goal during the game is to survive.
